Perfect Scoundrels Ally Carter Books

This is a great heist story that concludes the Heist Society trilogy. In this episode, Hale is called home because of the death of his beloved grandmother Hazel. Hale has been Kat's friend and colleague since she stole him from his grand home when he was thirteen or so. They have had adventures and run cons all over the world. But now, Hale seems to be pulling away from Kat as he grieves for his grandmother and gets sucked into the drama of his family.

When Hale's minder calls on Kat to meet with his sister who spent over 60 years as Hazel's maid, Kat learns that they believe that Hazel's will has been switched. The current will leaves Hale the whole of the Hale Company with the company's lawyer as his guardian until he reaches his majority. Kat and her family immediately begin to investigate the lawyer while keeping the investigation from Hale.

Kat needs to call in her whole family to run a con on a man who is already running a big con of his own. I was a little worried that Hale and Kat's relationship would be ruined by the changes in his circumstances but I loved the way things worked out.

It was fun following the twists and turns of this convoluted plot. It was also great to reconnect with other characters from the earlier books in this trilogy.

Perfect Scoundrels Ally Carter Books Reviews

*Review posted on Page Turners Blog on 2/26/2013*

Okay, I'll just say it - I'm a HUGE fan of Ally's writing. And as with any thing that I may love there's always a little (irrational) fear that perhaps, this one story won't live up to my expectations. Of course, I was dead wrong in this case.

Here's the thing about Ally's series (and yes, I'm dragging in Gallagher Girls into this review but only for a second so please bear with me), they are well planned and gorgeously executed, complicated plots with large casts of characters. But at some point, obviously book 3 in Heist Society (and book 4 in Gallagher Girls, Only the Good Spy Young), the stories turn inward and get a little dark. And this mama loves nothing more than when she's already invested in a story and then it's sprinkled with some dark revelations.

The resounding theme in both her series is family. And in Perfect Scoundrels the theme of family - the one you're born into versus the one you make with friends, co-workers and acquaintances - is a central theme. I may have wanted to hire a Gallagher girl or two to take out Hale's parents. But, you know what? I think I know a few absentee parents that could join them on their trips around the world.

Ally does many things well - her complex family business models, her large cast of characters that we grow to love (oh, Uncle Eddie has my heart and I even adore Kat's dad, Bobby) - but the thing she does the best is describing loss. Whether it's Cammie's lost memories from a crucial summer mission or Hale's pulling away when his grandmother dies. I felt that loss, and I felt it deeply. Nothing was more important to me then when Kat's dad explained to her that if Hale pulled away, they could steal him back. It made me smile, but I knew what he was saying, and he wasn't just saying it for Kat's sake.

As for my report on kissage. Well, we get Hale in his Superman pajamas (yes, we finally get to read the scene on how Hale and Kat met!) and there is kissing. Sad, sweet, melancholy kisses that go with a sweet, melancholy, keeping-you-on-the-edge-of-your-seat story. Let me go back and emphasize the sweet part, because the kissing is perfectly timed and believable within the plot.

This book goes on the shelf of books that I plan to share with my kids when they reach the age where they are interested in YA stories. They need to read this so they can see that family is the safety net that will always be there for them. Thank you Ally for another wonderful story. Now, let me brace my heart for what will happen in the next Heist Society novel.
I was semi hesitant to open Perfect Scoundrels since I wasn't totally enamoured with Uncommon Criminals. Some of the problems I had were fixed in this novel, though some still remained. However, this book would be a well-crafted finale, but I hope someday we will get to hold that fourth book in our hands and join the gang once more!

I really love the crew in these books. Something that Carter always excels at is group dynamics and it's such a pleasure reading the group scenes, always! I love that Gabrielle and Kat have grown so close. Simon and the Bagshaws are some of my favorite side characters ever and of course one simply cannot not love W.W. Hale the fifth.

In Perfect Scoundrels we officially meet some of Kat's family who we haven't seen yet (about time, dare I say! also, this was incredibly hilarious—especially uncle Felix hah) and there are other key players in this story of high-stakes who I loved to meet and am hoping we will see in the future as well if that fourth book indeed happens. Also, we get more background for Marcus who is always such a joy to have following along with our group.

The villain in this story is in the league of villains in Gallagher Girls final books tbh. They are really freaking awful and it's definitely a darker story than the previous installments in the Heist Society stories. I liked all the twist and turns that came upon our crew and the villain; it certainly made for an exciting, high-stakes game of cat and mouse where the outcome may not always be exactly what you're expecting.

As for the problems, I still feel like we should/could know more about the Bagshaws, Simon and Gabrielle; also, the other families' aspect is very much under developed still. I'd also like to know more about these heist moves that are named by all these famous things like classic lit and whatnot, not just have heist names being thrown out there for two pages. I now basically gloss over them because they don't really have any point to them especially when it's not explained how that "trick" works.

As a whole though, I would totally recommend these books to everyone. While they aren't jumping ahead Gallagher Girls in my favorites list, they're certainly quick and entertaining reads that everyone should give a try to. Friendship, family, mystery, high stakes, traveling across the globe (mostly Europe though) and a spark of romance—these books have it all, except more kissing which would always be appreciated in Ally's books [though this installment does include its fair share of smooching here and there )]. Nooooow, let's hope we really do get that fourth book, because I'd love to tag along for at least one more epic heist with this fantastic crew!
