The Improper Bride Sisters of Scandal Book 5 edition by Lily Maxton Romance eBooks

This book went from possible 5 stars to 4 within the first few pages when the heroine, Cassandra, says something about a task not being in her "job description." Servants in 1817 did not have job descriptions. They had duties. The modern verbiage appears frequently throughout the book. Cassandra has been an almost invisible and deferential housekeeper for Henry for five years but suddenly because he is bed ridden recovering from burns she just turns into a twentieth century paragon of challenge, intrusiveness, harping and psychoanalyzing his childhood. This book should have been written about a modern boss and his assistant. Slapping an old year on a story doesn't make it historical. There is nothing historical about this story, ending with the fact that even if he had decided to marry his housekeeper they would have spent years, if not their whole lives, in country estate exile, not back in the center of social life in London. Every character in the story with the exception of the main ones, are one dimensional caricatures and you don't have to scratch the surface of the main ones too deeply either before you discover that this is just all about them having the hots for each other. Three stars is just because it's not quite as bad as two but I spent most of the book annoyed by the construction and execution and never got pulled into the story.

The Improper Bride Sisters of Scandal Book 5 edition by Lily Maxton Romance eBooks Reviews

I almost missed out on this HR. I saw it online, read its plot description and decided against it. This isn't my kind of plot. You know, with the totally unrealistic pairing of H and h from disparate social levels. Here it's Henry, Marquess of Riverton, heir to a dukedom, and his housekeeper of five years, Cassandra. Marquess and housekeeper and a HEA? No way. I can see him setting up a house for her as his mistress, maybe making a few illegitimate children with her, maybe even falling in love. But not marriage. That's not the way of the real world, especially in the 1800s.

So my thanks to reviewer Danker, whose review inspired me to give this a try anyway. And she was right. For 60-70% this was almost better than a 5-star romance. The attraction, the chemistry, the build-up to love through friendship and respect. Why, be still my beating heart. This was so well written that the attraction is almost palpable. And the difference in social status is not shunted aside too easily. We can see that it is a problem. And this issue is worked into the story more realistically than in other aristocrat-servant HRs I've read which mostly emphasize the sexual attraction and sexual relationship.

However, by the time author Maxton has the H and h finally acting on their sexual attraction, the story began to lose some of its oomph and uniqueness and you see it begin to be more like all the other across-the-social-divide HRs I've read, when both of them are struggling to get on the same page about their relationship and where it should lead. (Not only that, but there are a lot of implausible events and some nonsensical behavior throughout the story that you can read about in the 2- and 3-star reviews which I agree with, but, for some reason, this didn't take away from the romantic relationship for me.)

For me, the first 70% of the story was so, so good that the last 30% could not bring down my star rating. Although I don't believe that a marriage between a marquess and his housekeeper would ever be acceptable in 1800s London society, Maxton did make me glad that in this tale they did find their HEA. She created two main characters that I cared about and wanted to be happy. A tad more realism in the novel could have had the two at the end limiting their social life to the area around Riverton or perhaps having them move to the more status-ignorant United States but I guess I'm OK with the fairy tale.

This is my first Maxton novel. I was so impressed with it that I bought three earlier entries in this series. I've tried out a couple but am not as impressed with them as with THE IMPROPER WIFE. Well, if one looks at the online photo of Lily Maxton, she looks to be an adorable 15-year-old. Perhaps she's recently starting to mature and come into her own as an author. I'll be checking out new novels by her when they come out.
My issues with this book had nothing to do with the "duke falls for his servant" trope. My issues had to do more with the attitude of the housekeeper toward the duke from the get go. Having said that, the story barely held my interest, mostly from the time the housekeeper, Cassandra, took it upon herself to "demand?" the Duke of Riverton teach her a foreign language while she sat for an hour with him each day as he was recuperating from severe burns on his person. In fact, I found her overstepping her position as housekeeper even before she and Riverton began to have their special daily times together.

Before Riverton's home was savaged by fire, apparently he was known as an arrogant man and most of his staff were a little afraid of him. The widowed Cassandra had been his housekeeper for a few years, being hired without any real experience except for helping in her family home and having some brief training by his former housekeeper. Sound a bit beyond belief? Yes, it does to me also. Then, after Riverton's and Cassandra's relationship began to develop every so slowly while he's teaching her German, he decides to have a house party in order to select a wife. During the house party, Cassandra gets her feelings hurt because he asks her in front of some guests to, "Get some ham from the cook." Well, what in the hey did she think she was? Something other than his housekeeper obviously.

Okay, okay, so there was chemistry between the two, and I can manage to suspend my belief when the story intrigues me enough. Obviously, this one did not. I found myself rushing through the last 1/4 of the book. Not sure I'm willing to give this author another try.
