I don't really read angel books. It comes from the church-going background I have. The theology for most of them doesn't match what I learned growing up and for some reason, it's hard for me to suspend my belief enough to get invested. I know, silly, but there it is. I more drifted to this book due that it was Etopia, the cover was gorgeous, and the psych ward angle. I'm not sure why, but I'm fascinated by mental institutions. And something about this one appealed to me.

First of all, something that I wasn't expecting was the fact that the end is rather ambiguous. You do not find out if Caleb was indeed an angel or not. Which is both a strength and weakness for me as the reader. I think not knowing is engaging and certainly cause me to continue thinking about this story long after I read it. However, it also bothered me. Because Caleb 'returns' to heaven to await Anna. He returns by entering the lake and basically dying. If Caleb is not an angel, he committed suicide. And that...as it is not necessarily looked on in a bad light in the book, it is really hard for me to be okay with that.

If Ms. Towbin did that on purpose, to make the reader question and wonder, she definitely achieved her goal. The book is well-written and seems to have a good understanding of mental illness (I am no expert) and there is something very desperate and sweet about Caleb and Anna's relationship even though it does smack of insta-love just a bit. Anna's parents are so easy to hate (nice to have some definite villains), and the side characters are well drawn if not vitally important. It's really just Caleb and Anna.

So, in conclusion of my rather scattered thoughts, I think this is a well-written novel. Original story to my reading experience and I have the utmost respect for its author. It just didn't connect with me, personally.

Straightjacket eBook Meredith Towbin Reviews

This book was a bit of a surprise, taking me places I didn't expect to go! It kept me thinking long after I'd finished reading it and was a real page turner.
Beautiful story of love and healing. I couldn't put this book down! You will fall in love with these characters and root hard for them. I can't wait to read more from this author!
I have to say that once I picked up Straightjacket, I couldn't put it down. Everything about this book was magical—from the characters to the story line. It makes you want to believe...
This was very good. I really connected with the characters and the story line kept me interested. I dealt with some if these issues personally as a teen, and it really hit home for me.
Straightjacket is a story of young love set against a backdrop of mental illness. Anna, the suicidal female protagonist, struggles with depression and panic attacks brought on by her abusive parents. Caleb Stark, Anna's love interest, suffers from catatonic stupors and believes he is an angel whose mission is to help save Anna. Straightjacket tells the story of how Anna and Caleb fall in love. Throughout the story, Anna and the reader must decide if Caleb is really and angel.

I really loved reading this novel. Meredith Towbin expertly shifts perspective between the two main characters. This allows the reader to watch the story unfold from two points of view.

This is a great book to read as part of a book club. It has many discussion points including a shocking ending.

I look forward to reading more from this very talented author.
Straightjacket- a love story of two teens, who actually meet in an insane asylum, one suicidal, one who believes he's an angel. How will this ever work you think as you start to read Meredith Towbin's book. The story is captivating as the author leads you into the lives of Anna and Caleb and unfolds the story of how they fall in love and have to fight to be together.

I found the book hard to put down once I started. Similar in nature to other YA novels with a sci-fi love story, the story is addicting and you find yourself pulling for the teens. The story goes a step farther than others I've read though because this could be a true story somewhere making it that much more intriguing. I also found myself chuckling at some of the things Meredith has written, another step above those other novels. Is Caleb actually an angel? One can only guess. Read the book, see what you think.
